Before school let out for break, my kids wrote a list for what they wanted to do this summer. The title of this list is “Have a Ball” and continues with…Hiking, Miniature Golf, Camping, Concerts in the Park, Biking, Swimming at Blue Lake, Train to Seattle, etc… So last week, after a rousing game of tether ball, my daughter asks when are we going to take the train trip. We went to the train station, booked the tickets, using my coupon from the Chinook Book-great coupon book, and we were off. I knew it was going to be interesting when half an hour into the trip, with activities spread out in front of us my kids ask “can’t we just play Angry Birds on your phone”. After 10 minutes of whining I give in, and the adventures of Angry Birds are at my children’s fingertips. Where was the running back an forth from car to car on the train, the spotting of fun things in the landscape-all the adventure of trains? Lost to Angry Birds. We get to Seattle, and have fish-n-chips on the water front, the kids feed the seagulls their scraps, and we walk around and actually have a great time, sight seeing and going into stores of the kids choice. We get home that night and my husband asks the kids how was their day-answer-
“We got to play Angry Birds on the train and we saw stuffed Angry Birds toys in a store”. I don’t like that game….

Wow, we can’t believe that it is August 1 already! Where has the summer been going? While going to a concert in the park one evening, a friend of Squash Clothing was wearing our latest offering, the PattyPan Tunic in the Boule Print. It looked great on her, and she was wearing it untied. It looked so great, I asked to take her picture with it tied and untied to show the true versatility of this tunic! Notice how she paired it with a pair of khaki capris, and open toed slides. Too Cute! Check out the Patty Pan Tunic and all the print offerings!

If you haven’t already figured it out, we name all of our tunics using a type of squash. Our latest tunic-the Patty Pan we thought was extra “catchy”. So we would like to share a recipe for Patty Pan squash. Enjoy!

The Players
5 or 6 medium patty pan squash, sliced
1/4 C melted butter from grass-fed cows (a truly healthy fat) or ghee from grass-fed cows
1 bunch fresh basil, chopped
sea salt
The How-To
Begin by preheating your oven to 350F degrees and prepping the veggies — cutting your patty pan squash into 1/4 inch slices and chopping your fresh basil.
Layer the patty pan slices at the bottom of a 2 quart baking dish and lightly drizzle with melted butter or ghee.
Scatter some freshly cut basil on top and lightly sprinkle with sea salt.
Continue forming these layers of patty pan squash, butter/ghee, basil, and salt until you’ve used all your squash and basil.
Cover the dish and bake it in the 350F degree oven for 30 minutes, or until the squash is tender. Remove from the oven and serve as a delectable side. In this case, it’s paired with butter-braised bite-sized pieces of strip steak. ENJOY!

Now that we are getting into the midst of summer time, there is no shortage of activities to discover for the kiddos. The one key element that I happen to find imperative to make any outing fun is FRIENDS! With Portland being in the height of the rose season, I wanted to go up to the nations largest Rose Garden, to look and smell the roses. The purpose was to get outside, clear my brain, and get inspired by natures beauty. What better way to engage the kids, but to ask friends to come along, pack a picnic lunch, and let them run free while I look, smell and enjoy the beauty that is the rose!

Who doesn’t love a parade? Last week in Portland, it was Rose Festival time! There was the Starlight Parade, the Grand Floral Parade, and the Jr. Rose Festival Parade all in one weeks time! The latter takes place in the middle of the week, in the middle of the day, and is geared towards kids, with the participants being mostly grade schools or clubs. Everyone is welcome though to join, you don’t even need to pre-register, you can just find yourself a spot and walk! Squash Clothing-as part of our supporting the schools, put in a lot of volunteer time in helping the 3rd Grade class at Sabin to do a “global awareness” project with all the kids choosing a country that they research, then decorating aprons with images from that country that they then wear during the parade. The kids had a great time, and Colonel Sanders in the background thought we were “FINGER LOOKING GOOD”
